Rick LaFlamme

Rick and Kathy have been members since 1982.  They have five grown children and six grandchildren.  Rick is a Circuit Judge for Jackson County, where he practiced law for 30 years before becoming a judge.  Kathy is a full time domestic engineer and is the primary caregiver for her mother, who lives with them.  Rick rejoined the board in 2014 after taking a lengthy leave of absence to serve on the board of Jackson Christian School.  In addition to serving as the chairman and treasurer of the church board, Rick also serves on the audio visual team and teaches the junior high Sunday School class.  When not occupied with work or church business Rick likes cutting wood to heat their home and cross country skiing, and still plays basketball regularly for exercise.  They both enjoy traveling to visit their children and grandchildren in Chicago, Phoenix and Seattle, and to Michigan's UP, where they met.

Mike Horton

Mike and Karen followed God's leading to the Jackson area in 1992 to serve as the youth pastor of a local church.  In late 1994, they felt led to start attending Skiff Lake. Mike (a graduate of The Grand Rapids School of the Bible & Music, Christian Education) and Karen (a graduate of Moody Bible Institute, Christian Education) have ministered at Skiff for 19 years in the education of youth, from nursery through Sr. High.  Mike has served as an Elder since 1997 in the areas of youth and missions. Mike is a special needs teacher assistant/teacher with the Jackson County Intermediate School District.  Karen works as a care giver for special needs adults. They enjoy their 3 grown children, riding bikes, walking, and generally spending time together.  Mike likes to write while Karen likes to draw.

Dale Thorne

Dale and his wife Janet have been attending SLBC since October 1994, when they moved to the area from IN to continue the family farm operation. They currently raise sheep and rotate crops of corn and soybeans. Dale serves on the American Lamb Board and is involved with the Michigan Sheep Breeders Association. Dale has been serving as an Elder at SLBC for several years now in areas of children’s ministries, men’s group and building and grounds. Dale’s interests include cooking for large groups, kayaking and golfing. Janet loves serving in the nursery, and in her spare time offers her services as a painter, decorator and cleaning the church. Sons Luke and Cody are now married with children of their own, so Dale and Janet spend as much time grand-parenting as possible.
