Cindy was raised in a Christian home and went to Sparta Baptist church that was just a half block from their house. She trusted Christ as her savior when she was 9 when she was talking with the pastor of their church. She continued to be active in the church through high school. When she went away to college at Central Michigan she was involved with a college ministry which was started by the pastor of Strickland Baptist Church, about 10 miles from Mt. Pleasant. One of the ministries of this church was a camp for children. The college students at the church would help with this camp.
Pete is the youngest of 8 children. His father was a Baptist pastor, so he heard about Jesus from a very early age. One Sunday night, after his dad had preached about hell, he was being put to bed by his mother and he said that he didn't want to go to hell. His mother shared the gospel and he trusted in Christ's death and resurrection as payment for his sin.
Being a PK, Pete tried really hard to prove that he could be just a bad as anyone else as he got into high school. He did a pretty good job of this and was probably worse than most. He went to Western Michigan University, majoring in Biology. Since his mother had all the kids memorizing scripture when they were young, Pete had to work very hard at rebellion. By the end of his junior year, he was really getting tired of this "game". It was at this time that he met Cindy.
Pete and Cindy both had one more year of college to complete their studies. With Cindy at Central and Pete at Western, they would alternate visiting each other. On the first anniversary of their first date, they were married, July 31, 1976. They joined the ministry that Cindy had been involved with at Central. Church Extension Ministries was a ministry which included a Bible Institute where the college student could get their Bible education at the same time they were getting their other degree.
The first 3 years of being on staff with CEM was the seminary.
After the ministry with CEM, Pete and Cindy went to the Philippines as church planters with RBMU. Then the Lord led us to ISI. He first gave us training in campus ministry, then cross-cultural ministry and then put the two together. This year, we will have been with ISI for 25 years.
We have 5 children and 9 grandchildren. We have been at Purdue for 11 years.
We were each called to the mission field separately and met on the mission field as single missionaries. We were married in 1991 and our daughter Brittany was born in 1993. We served in the country of Senegal for 23 years. Twenty of those years were spent in a remote location working with an unreached people group called Baynunk as part of a missionary church planting team. The last two years in Senegal we worked in support in the capital city of Dakar, managing a guest home, working with visiting teams, and substitute teaching at the MK school. In 2009 we relocated to the states and became involved in Regional Member Care where we debrief, coach, and counsel furloughing missionaries in our six state region known as the South Central Region. Kathy’s involvement with Skiff Lake Bible Church began in the early eighties as she began attending while a student at the New Tribes Bible Institute at Jackson. Dave married into the SLBC missionary family and first came to Skiff Lake in late 1991 shortly after we were married.
Paul and Cindy Spotts have the honor of being the parents of seven children and one granddaughter. They have been RBM missionaries for over 30 years. During most of that time, they served in southern Michigan teaching Released Time Bible classes for public school children and Bible Schools in the summer months.
Paul has also traveled to many other states and countries teaching in camps, conferences, and training sessions. He currently teaches the Released Time Bible classes at Hanover - Horton Elementary School as well as other schools. He serves as the Director of Field Development & Missionary Recruitment for RBM Ministries.
We are Drew and Grace Sanford, with our girls Nora (5) and Emmy(2). I (Drew) was raised in Arizona and Grace grew up in California, although our home as a family is right here in Jackson County. These are our teammates, Abby Knight- from the UP, and Ellen Yost- from Pensylvania. We are very excited to be heading to Papua New Guinea to plant a church among the unreached people groups there! We look forward to our time meeting together with each of you!
